My Favorite Things Quilt A judges choice quilt
Every year at quilt fest, the judges get to choose a quilt that they really liked to receive a judges choice ribbon. Sharon Aposhian Wright choose this quilt as her judges choice quilt. Donna Garrett made this beautiful quilt, for her daughter who is a librarian. What a great legacy for Donna's daughter.
About 1 1/2
years in the making. My
Favorite Things Quilt
was made for my daughter who works at the Logan library. These are actual book
titles and their authors. Nikki has read each of the books listed. The books
with the states are states where Nikki has lived. She likes reading, Disney,
dragons and purple is her favorite color. There is a family picture as well and
it wouldn’t be complete without a hidden Mickey (not that hidden).
This one was a
challenge! I started with scrap strips of various colors and sizes. Using
suggestions in the book: Personal Library Quilt by Crimson Tate, I made
individual blocks with the strips in assorted layouts. I then machine
embroidered the names of the books in alphabetical order according to the
Author’s names (as they do in the library).
I searched the
internet for machine embroidery designs. Some were paid for, most were free.
The picture and the bell vase were made with a clear vinyl embroidered over the
designs to mimic glass.
The blocks were
sewn together with a sashing at the bottom of each row of books.
I then quilted
it on my longarm machine using rulers to go around each book and adding
quilting on the bookshelf and around the background. I freehanded the quilting
on the backs of the shelves trying to mimic the wood grain in the background
fabric.
This was a labor
of love. In case you haven’t found it,
the hidden Mickey is in the bottom right of the bookshelf.
