FOLLOW ALONG WITH ME ON THE UQG BLOCK OF THE MONTH JOURNEY!
Introduced in March for the celebration of International Quilt Month, is the NEW Block of the Month! The patterns are being given by Kathy Bruckman who is the Social Media Chairwoman for our Guild. I gather that this is a bit of a Mystery Quilt from Kathy’s first Block installment since the only information given is that the first Block is a Nine-Patch.
This is to be Scrappy to compliment Quilt Fest’s It’s a Scrappy World After All theme. I like this because you get to do your own thing - no worries about light/darks and a certain number of fabrics. But, scrappy quilts can become a bit of a ‘mess’ if a theme or a controlled color palette isn’t chosen. Some quilters resolve this by pulling fabric from the same fabric designer. Kaffe Fassett and Lori Holt are examples. We tend to buy fabric that appeals to us the most and when we go through our stash, we discover the same designers over and over again.
Rummaging through your stash, you may discover that you don’t have piles of specific designer fabrics but you do have lots of themed fabrics. This is terrific because it helps for a more controlled scrappy quilt. Animal prints make terrific “I Spy” scrappy quilts. The floral bin I have makes for lovely girly quilts and my Utah bin makes great quilts for my house, RV, and my Moab neighbors. Some of us will discover that we hoard certain colors. For me this is the color, Green. My green bin is overflowing!
To alleviate the ‘What was I thinking?’ syndrome, I chose my theme to be DINOSAURS and my background tie-in color for the individual Blocks to be different scraps of GREEN. I found an unbelievable amount of Dinosaur prints in my Utah bin. My entire family loves Dinosaurs and it was the #1 reason for visiting Moab way back when.
Hint - I did not want this to become another UFO. And, I do not want yours to be, either! To keep your interest and to finish this quilt in its entirety, choose something that immediately speaks to you. Let it be fun! Let it make you smile! Mine does, for sure!
I would love to hear about your scrappy Block-of the Month Journey. Send comments to me, below.
I love the dinosaurs. So cute and didn't even think about fussy cut until I saw your block. I like the idea of flowers but will check my stash. I will post a picture when I'm done. Enjoy!
